Update: Traits of a Global Leader

02-Traits-of-a-Global-LeaderThe world is getting to be complex in inter-nation relationships while people still yearn for similar or basic needs such as compassion, good health, citizenry, relationship, decent finances, however, are tending to stray away from proven success patterns of leadership.  In light of this, I encourage and challenge all of us to take stock of barriers to the desirable traits shown below to apply them diligently in any possible area of our lives. This, done, on a gradual basis will help us seek alignment and peace to progress forward. Some of these desirable traits easily recognized in successful global leaders are postulated for you as follows (caution is not to achieve all of them in one attempt or try becoming perfect, but do so in planned stages and enjoy the journey regardless of how long it takes):

  1. Unusually high physical and mental energy leading to a contagious positive attitude
    1. Lifestyle they follow involves:
      1. Avoiding smoking, chewing tobacco, or Inhaling Snuff.
      2. Preventing excessive drinking and abuse of Chemical Substance.
      3. Avoiding complaining on weather, traffic, and flight delays – uncontrollable.
    2. Philosophy of Food Intake – Suggestions and not declarations!
      1. Maintain Sugar and Carbohydrate Balance
      2. Manage Fat and Triglyceride Minimization/Elimination
      3. Balance Calorie and Protein; Increase Fiber Intake
      4. Vitamin and Mineral Balance if necessary
      5. Water and Fruits/Freshly cooked and Raw Vegetables, choice of right meats;
      6. Cooked versus Fried preferences; Boiled versus Raw preferences
      7. Spice versus Salted foods; Barley (Quinoa) versus Rice;
      8. Skimmed versus Low Fat Milk
      9. Herbal Tea versus Coffee or Tea with and Milk and Sugar
      10. Complaining on food availability and its taste, particularly if others prepared it
    3. Sleep-Factors that can significantly influence your health
      1. Late night versus normal or made up Hours
      2. Interrupted sleep versus Uninterrupted Patterns
      3. Being Robust to Location of sleep; Ensure 3-4 hours of activity before sleep
      4. Appropriate neck exercises before and after long flights
    4.   Exercise
      1. Anaerobic versus Aerobic; Internal versus External
      2. Consistency versus Length of exercise
      3. Yoga and Meditation including breathing exercises
      4. Ritual activity other than professional
        • Finding ways to relax everyday
        • Socializing with friends, and peers
        • Corporate team meeting/events
    5. Association in mind, body, soul, and company
        1. People and company kept; Information and magazines/newspapers you read
        2. Programs and shows watched; The type of counsel taken and provided


  2. Response to need with speed
    1. Email Management
      1. Very brief and not more than one screen page per email
      2. If it takes more than a screen page, attach it as a file
      3. Nothing personal or emotional on email or texting content
      4. For personal matters, call on mobile or land or use VoIP call if urgent
      5. Spell check your emails properly without fail
      6. Be professional on work/business email without washing dirty linen in public
      7. Change subject matter content for ease of search at least
    2. MS Office Tools
      1. Power Point – Minimize text use more visuals
      2. Excel – Use simple graphs and avoid showing digits/text alone
      3. Word – Minimize text and show visuals instead
      4. Outlook – Manage email and archive for rapid retrieval
      5. Get HTML educated as and when possible
    3. Voice Mail (in some cultures as in older generation in the US almost archaic now)
      1. Always leave a voice mail in case you call them (applies only in some cultures)
      2. Leave a message on where, when to reach you, name and any specific needs
      3. Texting is much more acceptable across all ages and countries
    4. Telephone
      1. With advanced technology there is no need to yell at the top of your voice.
      2. People who answer your call are not stone deaf.
      3. Take your call away to a quiet area for privacy and noise avoidance.
      4. Lower volume on your mobile and email alerts and avoid unusual ringer tones.
      5.   Speak slowly and professionally in English to help them understand at their best.
      6. Remember people watch what you do and they may tend to copy you.
      7. Pick up the phone within 2 rings and keep it with you all the time.
    5. Skype VOIP
      1. Be professional and use Skype to determine convenience for recipient
      2. Find out if you can chat or call them land line or mobile or Skype
      3. Never call just because you see them on Skype or have their mobile number
      4. Never offer or request to turn the video feature on unless agreed to do so
    6. Internet
      1. Become internet savvy and follow the rules and policies of your employer
      2. Learn principles of HTML as and when possible to avoid ignorance
      3. Understand property of employer includes:
        1. Employer’s working hours (usually 9 AM – 6 PM) devoted 100 % at work
          1. Be at the office earlier and leave later without excuses.
          2. Other than breaks or personal lunch hours
            • (i)    Make sure visitors are taken care of
          3. Do not come late to the office as it is not a hotel or public utility.
          4. With jobs going virtual, communicate your location coordinates
          5. Make sure your management knows where you are.
          6. Welcome associates on their 1st day to create an impression.
        2. Employer’s property such as:
          1. Mobile phone, Internet account; Wireless card, PC, Accessories, Printer; Key Stick are all work/business related.
        3. Employer’s materials such as IP copyrights on content of electronic files.
        4. Stay away from restricted sites using common sense and avoid them.
        5. Do not hover/peep into monitors or open laptops belonging to others.

  3. Planning and executing proactively
    1. One who plans proactively
      1. Does not wait for employer or customer to tell him what to do, but proposes!
      2. Proposes and ask for feedback or comments or suggestions.
      3. Controls the situation taking responsibility or blame on most occasions.
    2. One who avoids procrastination
      1. Never procrastinate beyond one reminder at the extreme.
      2. Don’t delegate to someone else since you couldn’t get it done.
      3. If you are not motivated by it, it is time to find who is and delegate immediately.
    3. Eliminates last minute arrangements/reworking
      1. Last minute submissions are always risky or errors and big mistakes.
      2. Asking for extension earlier is better than last minute requests.
    4. Complaining about factors other than taking personal responsibility
      1. Taking responsibility is the first step; Assuming accountability and rectify;
      2. Integrity, honest, ethics, morality all pay off in the global work environment.

  4. Highly visual in tools and techniques
    1. Your school of thought on hand writing in a book:
      1. Use a paper notebook and pencil in meetings for your notes and references.
      2. Write everyday and find an excuse to write when you talk to someone.
      3. Traveling provides a great opportunity to write, scribe, and share experience.
      4. Writing makes your convictions stronger as you share knowledge.
      5. Writing also allows the free flow of thoughts leading to innovation.
    2.   Scripting on board, platform charts
      1. This is a great way to cut down nervousness in case you feel so.
      2. It will also help the audience with some change in pace of discussion.
      3. Relaxes everyone while you could also ask them to come forward and engage.
    3. Your public speaking skills
      1. Be able to write and speak on public forums/audiences
      2. Get a mentor to challenge and guide you
      3. Your mentor will be one who challenges your criteria, not your decision
    4. Visual tools of analysis and interpretation
      1. Charts, graphs, simple flow diagrams
      2. JPEG, short movie clips with globally acceptable humor.
      3. Create sub titles in the local language even if is an investment.
      4. Be sensitive to what you display and never offend anyone or their belief.
      5. Check with employer on content shown and topic discussed for validation.
      6. If you downloaded it somewhere always acknowledge where it came from.

  5.   Maintaining relationships
    1. Focusing on other people’s lives and challenges
      1. This is a tough one, as we tend to focus on our lives and challenges instead.
      2. People need to know that we care instead of caring what we know.
      3. Just be a common person and have an ear for listening.
    2. Never discussing personal goals at any time other than with mentor who will:
      1. Watch, listen, and challenge you to arrive at a decision without advice.
      2. Ensure as a person counseling you is also aware of your personal goals.
      3. Avoid discussing personal/confidential information unless absolutely necessary.
      4. Encourage you to use accurate/precise data in your decision making process.
      5. Discourage public letting down in front of staff but counsel in privacy.
      6. Avoid rejecting approving in public, as they are both subject to embarrassment.
      7. Do not refer to people using physical attributes such as appearance, skin color, height, weight, but use names and places where they are from or show pictures.
      8. Avoid humor in these areas as well to avoid offending anyone even innocently.
    3. “Always ask, and rarely tell” Socratic approach to coaching/conflict management:
      1. While mentoring or discussing a problem resolution with the other person:
        1. Ask meaningful questions leading the listener to solutions of their own.
        2. Never give directions or answers but make them think without hints.
        3. While asking, be polite, challenging, yet compassionate.
        4. A way to get them to own the problem and solution and avoid blaming.
        5. The only time you “tell” is when you cannot afford to ask, as in:
          • Situations of safety or life threatening, medical situation or
          • Wartime command and situations involving little children!

In order to accomplish the above 5 areas of personal achievement one has could focus on two physical attributes of their daily lives consistently:

  • Always strive to be your best on what you do
  • Show 100 % passion in whatever you do


With physical adjustment and personal achievement,

we consistently need mental alignment:

“Your work/business efforts should always add value to someone else”
